The New Book Den

BHDLC is pleased to announce that the Book Den in Burgess Hill will be re-opening on Thursday 9th July. Going forward the Shop will be open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday between the hours of 9.30am - 12.30pm and 1pm - 4pm.

In order to comply with Covid-19 recommendations and to protect our customers and staff, all customers will be required to wear a face covering (including children) and have hand sanitizer applied on entry. All customers will also need to respect social distancing and follow the direction arrow marked on the shop floor.  Only 6 customers will be allowed in the Shop at any one time.  We will also ask our customers to leave shopping trolleys, prams and pushchairs outside the Shop.

We would still welcome donations of good quality books, jigsaw puzzles, maps, dvds, cds and records.  These can only be accepted at the rear of the Shop which is off Crescent Way and only at hours when the shop is open.  Please do not leave donations if the shop is closed.  All donations will be stored in a quarantine area for 72 hours before being sorted and displayed in the Shop.  We have limited space for storage so we may have to limit the amount of donations that we can accept.  Please bear with us during these difficult times.

Another important change is that we would now prefer payment to be made by card and, if possible "contactless".  We accept Visa, Mastercard and Maestro cards only (Debit or Credit).  We will, however, still accept cash.

Once the Covid-19 threat is over we hope to be able to open on additional days but for the foreseeable future it will be just on 3 days each week.

Burgess Hill District Lions depends on many different activities to fund all its welfare projects. One large on-going activity is the "Book Den" - the second-hand book shop in the town centre (86-88 Church Walk) where anyone is welcome to bring their old books, jigsaws, CDs and DVDs. We will sort them and recycle any unwanted ones. The Book Den is currently open three days a week and is a very popular venue in the town.  Opening times are currently as follows: Thursday to Saturday: 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

We accept donations at the rear door during the above hours.   The rear door is in Crescent Way, almost opposite Cyprus Road car park. All books are sorted into major categories and fiction by author. There's no sales pressure - just take your time and you're bound to find something you want!  Please come along and browse.

It's also the final re-cycling place for books as the paper cannot easily be re-cycled: we use a specialist firm for this.  We get through hundreds of books per week so please bring us your unwanted ones - we need them!  The previous Book Den featured in an article in Sussex Living for Mid Sussex, who have kindly given their permission for it to be reproduced here. The new Book Den is even better!

Burgess Hill District Lions Club would welcome any surplus books that you may no longer require. Currently our stocks are running low. During an average month we sell up to 5,000 books over the counter.

We are only too pleased to accept deliveries at the rear of our premises at 86-88 Church Walk, Burgess Hill.  Donations should be at the rear door between Thursday to Saturday: 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.00pm to 4.00pm. The rear door is in Crescent Way, almost opposite Cyprus Road car park.

For further information, you can telephone the shop on 01444 233278 or email the Bookshop Manager on bookshop@bhdlions.org.uk.

We have a community working partnership with a big local garden centre called South Downs Nurseries and have worked with them all the year round for the last six years.

One day when we were talking with the management of the nurseries we hit on the idea of their selling novels for us in their café at a £1 a book. In the first three months this earned us nearly £1000. This is the official launch photo where the Chairman of our District Council declared it open.

Please have a coffee and browse through the books next time you go to the South Downs Garden Centre!

In addition, we sometimes hold Book Sales there in March.

Currently, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our Book Bank at South Downs Garden Centre is unavailable.

Please bring any donations to the rear of our Burgess Hill shop.
